Family Dinner Weekend: Friday Evening Bulls Game

We’ve been cooking up plans for the family dinner weekend, and are getting excited that we’ve scheduled the weekend for early summer. I’ve reserved 12 tickets to the Durham Bulls game on Friday May 29 at 7:00 PM. I know not all of you will be in town yet, and not all of you (Kara) would be interested in the game, but hey, it’s easy entertainment for some of us. It’s not a boys only thing, and not a “kids” only thing.  Let us know if you want to go – I think 12 tickets will be enough, but I’m pretty sure I can get more nearby if necessary.

durhambulls1The Durham Bulls are the AAA affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays – many members of the young Rays team that went to the World Series have played here the past few years. We’ve gotten a chance to see them through work sponsored events for various jobs we’ve had. They’re playing the Bison Buffaloes, er, Buffalo Bison all weekend – they’re future and injured Mets or something. Our seats for the evening are high up above first base, but the stadium is not so big, so it’s not quite nosebleed high. Many of the best seats were already booked, as this game is sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC. So expect a lot of families that just aren’t as cool as ours

Kevin Costner, Tim Robbins, and Susan Sarandon respectfully declined their invitations to our weekend festivities. And the classic Durham Athletic Park from the movie is actually in another part of town. They do have the “Hit Bull Win Steak” sign though. Not sure if the steaks are bulls, buffalo, or bison for this game. I’ll buy a big ballpark beer for anyone who comes dressed like Crash:

Down the Aisle

Filed under: Our Wedding — Andy @ 10:52 pm

We didn’t really walk down an aisle (it was a sidewalk and we actually came in from the side), but the whole wedding party did ride together in Vansonia.

For most of the ride we didn’t play music so that everybody could talk and laugh together, but I did cue up two songs that Kara and I always wanted to be a part of our wedding day:

May This Be Love (player on the upper right of the linked page)

and

I Got You (I Feel Good) (I obviously didn’t play the 45 in the van…)

As the second song ended, I cut the stereo and we pulled into a parking spot to try to find the magistrate’s office…

Corsage cuffs

I wanted to get my maids of honor and photographer extraordinaire corsages instead of bouquets, but was looking for something different than the average flower shop piece.  They suggested wrist corsages, and I went with the idea.
Our friend, the talented leather worker: Iris of RADCOW Leatherworks, made these great cuffs for me.  I asked for holes to pull ribbons through and she came up with what I think of as a solar system of different sizes on dyed blue and grey leather.  She calls it the moon walker, which I love.
I used different ribbons in each cuff, wove them through and left the length long to float in the wind.  Jett found these great wicker flower buttons for me at our local fabric store, where we also got the ribbon.  (note: Always partner with a toddler, they see things at a different level.  :) )
The best thing about these corsage cuffs is that the ribbons can be pulled off after the wedding and you’ve got a cool piece to wear for the everyday.  I admit to having one made for myself to match.  Too cool to resist.

You can find RADCOW leather goods at Roulette Vintage or if you are out of town, on her Etsy site.

DIY wedding bouquet

I wanted something very simple for my bouquet and decided to leave it to fate and see what was available the night before.  So on the eve of the wedding, I dragged Jamie and Misha to a local grocery store.  There I found these lovely hydrangeas.  Add some ribbon and lace from the local fabric store, and voila: a bouquet.  We also used snippets of the hydrangeas for Andy and Danny’s boutonnieres.

We wanted to share our wedding with everyone, hence the blog and photos.  Yes, we do plan to have a celebration party in the spring.  Lots of love to all of our family and friends and thanks so much for all the good wishes!

We have posted some pictures on Flickr, you can click on the right to go to our album.  We’ll continue to post more as we get them.

vansonia gets fancy

Filed under: lagniappe,Our Wedding — la fleur @ 12:46 pm

We spent our wedding night at a lovely B&B in Pittsboro, The Rosemary House.
When we woke up this morning, Julie had come in the night and decorated the van with a home made sign, balloons and toilet paper.  Unfortunately it rained last night.  But it still looked properly fancy.  :)
Thanks Julie!!

Rebecca and Jamie decorated this yummy chocolate cake, made by our friend Leslie of Sari-Sari Sweets.
The birds are hand made by Middleburg Folk Art Studio.  Jamie made the bird bride’s veil and they cleverly found the top hat somewhere…

the rings

Filed under: lagniappe,Our Wedding — la fleur @ 7:04 pm

Our rings are hand made from recycled gold.  Andy’s ring is white gold and mine is rose gold.  We got them from the lovely wonderful people at Green Karat.

Andy’s ring was once a medieval goblet, and Kara’s was pirate treasure!  (so we like to think…)
